Giancarlo Stanton is carted off the field at Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin after swinging (ruled by umpire) and being hit in the face with a pitch from Mike Fiers in the 5th inning.
Miami Marlins star outfielder and slugger Giancarlo Stanton was hit in the face by a pitch Thursday, and immediately fell to the ground in pain and bleeding. Onsite medical personnel rushed to his side before being driven off the field in a Bell’s special onfield ambulance.
Stanton, 24, was trying to get out of the way as the pitch that rose up and to the right out of the right-handed batter’s strike zone. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers threw up his hands in horror at the site of his pitch hitting Stanton.
Stanton suffered a laceration, multiple facial fractures, and dental injuries. His diagnosis included X-rays and a CT scan, and he was hospitalized. Marlins manager Mike Redmond acknowledged that Stanton could miss the remainder of the season.
Stanton’s father was at the game and came on the field as his son was transported on the field ambulance to the regular transported ambulance.
There was some controversy on the field as the first base umpire ruled that Stanton swung at the pitch. Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee was in the on-deck circle when pinch-hitter Reed Johnson was hit by a pitch in the hand after Stanton was hit. He was ruled to swinging, and then Casey McGehee began shouting at Fiers and home plate umpire Jeff Kellogg. The benches clear and both Casey McGehee and Marlins Manager Mike Redmon were ejected.
